TEENS CAN TAKE A STAND AGAINST JUVENILE CRIME
AND APPLY FOR PEER JURY
Peer Jury is a program that allows a first-time teenage offender to have their case
heard by a jury of peers instead of going to traditional court.
Teen offenders are given the opportunity to accept responsibility for their
criminal behavior. By agreeing to have peers determine what the penalty should
be, young offenders keep their offense from going on their record as a conviction.
The Lake in the Hills Police Department is seeking teens from the ages of 13
through 17 to volunteer as peer jurors. Jurors personally benefit from the
experience by learning about juvenile justice and performing a valuable service to
their community.
Teens can apply for this rewarding experience as a juror by completing a form
online.
Teen court meets once a month and the peer jury questions the defendant about
the incident. After deliberating in a fair and unbiased manner, the jury issues a
